# Revving Up Your RV? Think Safety First!

Going on a cross-country trip is fun and exciting, especially if you’re doing it in an RV. You’ll see different areas of the country and have complete control of your schedule. Before you pile into your RV, though, pack along these tips for safety.[1] - Pay attention to driving. Don’t let yourself become distracted by your passengers. - If you’re new to handling an RV, practice driving it before you head out on the road. RVs are much bigger than cars, and parking and reversing them can be tricky, even for experienced drivers. - Pack necessary safety equipment, like a smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, and cell phone and charger. - Check all fluid levels before you leave: oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and wiper fluid. - Look underneath the vehicle to identify and resolve any leaks before you start your trip. - Check the air pressure in the tires and the lights before you go. - When you’re packing, make sure the weight of your luggage is evenly distributed throughout the vehicle. - Don’t leave your generator on while you’re sleeping; it releases dangerous odorless carbon monoxide. - Make sure you lock your RV when no one is inside. Increase the likelihood that you stay safe by bringing a traveling companion along.
